I spent fifteen years building two résumés at the same time. Only one of them fit on paper.

The first one you can scan in thirty seconds: MBA from Vanderbilt. A decade-plus leading revenue growth across SaaS, manufacturing, and consumer products. Co-founded a beverage company and scaled it from $10K to $1m in 18 months. Built and managed multi-million dollar pipelines. Hired, trained, and coached sales teams that beat quota.

The second résumé came in a different way.

While I was building the first one, life was working on me. A month at a trauma recovery center in the hills of Kentucky, digging into childhood stories I'd been carrying for thirty years. A marriage that ended. A custody battle that broke me open. Business ventures that collapsed and pipelines that vanished overnight. Years of learning — slowly, and mostly the hard way — that the man building the career and the man avoiding his own interior were the same man, and that no amount of achievement was going to close that gap. So I decided to face the interior.

Somewhere in those years I stopped treating difficulties as interruptions to my real life and started treating them as the curriculum that life has put in front of me.

Those difficulties have been doorways of growth — the moments when an old identity stops working and something truer gets the chance to emerge from the depths of your being. I've been given an opportunity to walk through many and each one cost me something I thought I couldn't live without. However each one also gave me back something I didn't know I'd lost.

That's the education underneath the education. The MBA taught me how businesses grow. The doorways taught me how people grow.

​

Here's what I've come to know: we will rarely grow until we outgrow the story we are telling ourselves. I've seen it in business and I've lived it in my own life.
